Torticollis represents a tightness of one sternocleidomastoid muscle (located on the lateral sides of the neck) which can be treated with stretching. The vast majority of children treated with this regimen will do fine and need no surgery and have no residual problems.
If the head is tight towards the left* or the head is flat on the left*: (*patient’s left)
- During each diaper change, bring the right ear towards the right clavicle for about one minute in a slow steady stretch. Stretch to the point of resistance but not to the point of pain.
- Rearrange the patient’s room so that he will need to look towards the right.
If the head is tight towards the right** or the head is flat on the right**:(**patient’s right):
- During each diaper change, bring the left ear towards the left clavicle for about one minute in a slow steady stretch. Stretch to the point of resistance but not to the point of pain.
- Rearrange the patient’s room so that he will need to look towards the left.
